Zohran Mamdani, the 34-year-old democratic socialist known for his advocacy on working-class issues, has been elected as the new mayor of New York City.
His victory marks a significant shift in the city’s political landscape, defeating former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo for the second time and cementing the rise of progressive politics in the city.
Mamdani triumphed in a three-way general election that included Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa, who refused to withdraw despite pressure from Cuomo and his supporters. The result solidifies Mamdani’s reputation as a grassroots leader who mobilized a diverse coalition to achieve what was once considered an underdog campaign.
At his election night event in Brooklyn, Mamdani told cheering supporters that they had ushered in a “new age” of politics for working-class New Yorkers. “For as long as we can remember, the working people of New York have been told that power does not belong in their hands,” he said, addressing workers from warehouses, kitchens, and delivery services. “Tonight, against all odds, we have grasped it.”
Mamdani celebrated the victory as a symbolic end to the Cuomo political dynasty, adding, “I wish Andrew Cuomo only the best in private life. But let tonight be the final time I utter his name.”
The win also represents a triumph for the progressive wing of the Democratic Party at a time when national Democrats remain divided on how to counter former President Donald Trump. Trump, a New York native, has repeatedly attacked Mamdani, calling him a “communist” and warning that he would “take over” the city.
Mamdani dismissed such attacks, saying, “If anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave rise to him. This is not only how we stop Trump – it’s how we stop the next one.”
The new mayor’s policy platform includes freezing rent for residents of rent-stabilized apartments, offering free public bus rides, and implementing universal childcare through a tax on the wealthy. His proposals aim to make the United States’ most expensive city more affordable for working families.

Zohran Mamdani is a three-term state assemblyman who entered the mayoral race as a perceived longshot against Andrew Cuomo. Born in Uganda and raised in Cape Town, South Africa, he moved to New York City at age seven. A graduate of the Bronx High School of Science and Bowdoin College, Mamdani is the son of Columbia University professor Mahmood Mamdani and acclaimed Indian filmmaker Mira Nair, known for Monsoon Wedding and Mississippi Masala.
Before entering politics, Mamdani worked as a housing counselor and briefly pursued a rap career under the stage name “Mr. Cardamom.” His past music video for “Nani,” celebrating his grandmother and South Asian culture in New York, became a focus of attack ads during the campaign.
