In a shocking incident, two terrorists carried out a bomb attack near ministry buildings in the heart of Ankara on Sunday. The Turkish Interior Minister, Ali Yerlikaya, confirmed that one of the terrorists detonated an explosive device, while the other was “neutralized” by authorities during the attack.
The explosion, which was followed by reports of gunfire, occurred at approximately 9:30 AM local time in the Kizilay area, causing alarm throughout the Turkish capital.
During the attack, two police officers sustained minor injuries, and swift action was taken by security forces. The injured officers are now receiving medical attention.
Ali Yerlikaya, the Interior Minister, provided details of the incident, stating, “Two terrorists arrived in a light commercial vehicle in front of the gate of the General Directorate of Security and carried out a bomb attack. One of the terrorists blew himself up.”
He further added, “Our struggle will continue until the last terrorist is neutralized.”
Following the explosion, security forces cordoned off the area and deployed bomb squads to examine the vicinity near a parked vehicle. The location of the attack was in close proximity to several government buildings, including the Turkish Grand National Assembly.
In response to the incident, the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office initiated an investigation into the terrorist attack, as reported by Anadolu Agency.
As a precautionary measure, increased security was put in place around the area, and the main Ataturk Boulevard was temporarily closed to traffic due to the explosion.
The Grand National Assembly, which had been on a three-month break, was scheduled to open in the afternoon. Special operations police were also dispatched to the scene to ensure the safety and security of the area.
Turkish media reported that the explosion was heard near the parliament and ministerial buildings. Television broadcasts showed debris scattered on a street close to the Interior Ministry, highlighting the aftermath of the tragic event.
