Pakistan has strongly rejected a statement issued by the Afghan Foreign Ministry concerning the political situation in the country, advising the Afghan Interim Government (AIG) to address its own internal challenges rather than interfering in the affairs of a democratic nation. The Foreign Office (FO) in Islamabad released a firm response following comments from Afghanistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the recent protests by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supporters in the federal capital.
The Afghan spokesperson had expressed concerns over the tensions between the Pakistani government and opposition party workers, suggesting that the unrest could have broader regional consequences. In response, Pakistan’s Foreign Office spokesperson, Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, labeled the remarks as “frivolous” and “unacceptable,” criticizing the Afghan government’s unwarranted interference in Pakistan’s domestic matters.
“Rather than lecturing a democratic country, the AIG should focus on addressing its own internal problems, ensuring inclusivity, and responding to the needs of its citizens, particularly in safeguarding the right to education for women and girls,” Baloch stated. She further emphasized that Afghanistan must also fulfill its international commitments by preventing terror groups from operating within its borders, which threaten regional peace and security.
The spokesperson reiterated Pakistan’s dedication to peace, dialogue, and regional cooperation, urging Afghanistan and other neighboring countries to respect the fundamental principles of international conduct and interstate relations.
The exchange of statements followed the restoration of law and order in Islamabad after days of unrest fueled by PTI protests. Authorities had to deploy tear gas and set up roadblocks to manage the demonstrations, which were organized to demand the “independence of the judiciary” and the release of PTI founder Imran Khan, who has been incarcerated in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail for over a year.
The protests led to clashes between PTI workers and law enforcement, with both sides accusing the other of instigating violence. However, authorities have managed to bring the situation under control.
This diplomatic spat underscores the delicate nature of relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan, with both countries navigating complex internal and regional challenges.
