In a series of distressing incidents, three citizens in Karachi were shot and wounded as they resisted robbery attempts in different areas of the city.
According to the Defence police, one of the victims, Mashkoor Hussain, aged 35, was pursued by four suspects after he had withdrawn Rs1 million from a private bank in Phase II Extension. The assailants snatched the cash from him and resorted to gunfire when he put up resistance. The suspects then fled the scene. Mashkoor Hussain sustained gunshot wounds on his shoulder and was immediately taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre. Fortunately, his condition is reported to be stable.
In another unfortunate incident, Abdul Ghani, aged 25, was shot and injured in the Afghan Basti area, as reported by the Gulshan-i-Maymar police. The wounded individual was promptly transported to Civil Hospital Karachi for medical treatment.
Additionally, the Ibrahim Hyderi police reported that Allah Bux, aged 58, was shot and wounded during a robbery resistance near Ali Mohammed Goth. Unknown suspects were responsible for the attack, and Allah Bux was subsequently transferred to the JPMC for medical care.
Data compiled by the Sindh police revealed alarming statistics related to robberies and violence in Karachi. Between January and May of the current year, 44 Karachiites lost their lives due to robberies. This number represents a significant increase compared to the same period last year, which recorded 26 such incidents. The data underscores a troubling trend of a doubling in murders during robbery attempts.
The statistics further reveal that Karachi experienced 116 shop robberies and 1,713 other incidents of robbery during the initial five months of the year. Additionally, there were 518 car-related incidents, with 46 vehicles being forcibly taken at gunpoint, and 472 stolen. These figures highlight the pressing issue of public safety and the need for effective measures to address rising criminal activities in the city.
