The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has rejected the petition filed by PTI Chairman Imran Khan challenging his indictment in the cipher case, reiterating the importance of ensuring a fair trial process.
In the cipher case, Imran Khan is accused of retaining a diplomatic document, allegedly containing a threat from the United States, resulting in the former premier’s conviction and subsequent imprisonment.
During the hearing, the IHC Chief Justice Aamer Farooq stressed the significance of granting a fair trial to Imran Khan despite rejecting the plea. The court directed that the necessary documents be provided to the accused for proper understanding of the charges.
The petition filed by Imran Khan highlighted procedural irregularities and emphasized that the crucial evidence, the cipher document, was not included in the case file or the charge sheet, rendering the framing of charges illegal.
The defense lawyer, Salman Safdar, underscored the swift framing of charges within a few days, raising concerns about the lack of proper evidence presentation and the alleged haste in the trial proceedings.
The IHC reserved its verdict on the petition, considering the arguments presented by both the defense and the prosecution.
