Justice Shahid Karim of the Lahore High Court on Monday issued directives for the closure of schools and colleges on Saturdays in Punjab, alongside the implementation of a work-from-home policy, in response to inadequate measures to curb dangerous smog levels.
During the hearing on air pollution control, Justice Karim criticized the Lahore commissioner, ordering the removal of deputy commissioners in certain districts and the director-general of the environment. The judge emphasizes the severity of the situation in Sheikhupura, Jhang, Hafizabad, Khanewal, Nankana, and Bahawalnagar.
Expressing disappointment over videos showing crop residual burning, Justice Karim urges immediate action. He remarks on the impact of vehicle exhaust on smog, highlighting the need for comprehensive measures.
The court adjourns the hearing till Wednesday, instructing the commission member to meet with the Punjab chief secretary and relay the court’s orders.
Last week, the Punjab government declared a public holiday due to smog, shutting down markets, schools, and offices. The Lahore High Court’s recent directives aim to address persistent air quality challenges.
