The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has filed a corruption reference in Lahore’s accountability court against PTI President Parvez Elahi and 12 others, accusing them of receiving Rs1.23 billion in bribes related to Gujrat development projects.
NAB identifies Elahi and his son Moonis as prime suspects, alleging they received the highest kickbacks totaling Rs744 million. Elahi, a former chief minister, faces multiple cases, including an FIA money laundering case and charges of illegal appointments in the Punjab Assembly.
According to the NAB reference, the suspects misused their authority to secure kickbacks for themselves in the Highways Department schemes in Gujrat. The watchdog claims sufficient incriminating material justifies filing the reference.
NAB Chairman Lt-Gen Nazir Ahmed calls for a court trial, seeking punishment in accordance with the law. The watchdog alleges Elahi and his son harmed the national exchequer and urges an expedited investigation.
The case revolves around bribes for road scheme contracts in Gujrat, with Elahi and Moonis accused of causing losses to the government exchequer. The NAB ordinance of 1999 charges them with corruption and corrupt practices.
