Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s sons, Hasan and Hussain, have been granted relief by an accountability court in corruption cases linked to Al-Azizia Steel Mills, Flagship company, and Avenfield apartments.
During the proceedings, the brothers’ counsel argued that Nawaz Sharif had been exonerated in the Flagship reference, and the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) withdrew its appeal against the trial court verdict last year. The defense emphasized that proceedings could not continue solely based on allegations of abetting when the main suspect had been acquitted.
Deputy Prosecutor NAB Azhar Maqbool informed the court that the Supreme Court’s verdict did not hinder the case, allowing the court to announce its decision on the petition. He clarified that the cases against Maryam Nawaz and Capt (retd) Safdar had been concluded by the high court.
The defense lawyer highlighted that the accountability watchdog failed to present evidence against Maryam and Nawaz, leading to their acquittal by the Islamabad High Court (IHC). Hasan and Hussain’s counsel argued against prosecuting them, stating it would be a waste of the court’s time as no additional evidence had been presented.
Previously, the accountability court had approved bail for both brothers in exchange for Rs50,000 bond each in the three references. The court also revoked their perpetual arrest warrants and fugitive status.
With petitions for acquittal filed by Nawaz’s sons, the accountability court has issued a notice to the NAB, indicating further developments in the legal proceedings.
