In the world of cricket, verbal spats and heated exchanges between players have become commonplace, but physical altercations remain rare and deplorable. Such incidents on the cricket field tarnish the spirit of this beautiful sport and should not be condoned. Recently, a similar regrettable incident occurred in Bangladesh, although not among professional cricketers but among celebrities from the film industry.
In anticipation of the Bangladesh national cricket team’s participation in the 2023 ODI World Cup in India, a Celebrity Cricket League (CCL) was organized in Bangladesh to ignite the cricket fervor among fans. Unfortunately, the 2023 edition of this tournament, featuring film stars, turned out to be more embarrassing than inspiring.
During a CCL match at Dhaka’s Shaheed Suhrawardi Indoor Stadium on a Friday night, a violent altercation erupted between the players, resulting in injuries to six individuals. Reports suggest that the dispute between filmmaker Mustafa Kamal Raj’s team and Dipankar Deepon’s team stemmed from a contentious decision made by the umpire. What began as a verbal disagreement quickly escalated into a physical brawl, with players resorting to punches and wielding cricket bats.
A video capturing this unsightly fight has circulated on social media, and as explained by an eyewitness (referred to as “X user”), the incident was triggered by a disputed boundary call and the umpire’s decision to declare a player out.
