Tech billionaire Elon Musk dropped a hint on Tuesday that users of the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, might soon face a monthly fee. In a conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Musk suggested that implementing a payment system is the most effective way to combat the issue of bots and fake accounts on social media.
“We’re moving to having a small monthly payment for use of the system,” Musk stated during the conversation. However, it remains unclear whether this remark was a spontaneous comment or an indication of more concrete plans in the works.
The new owner of the social media giant X, who assumed control last year, has been encouraging users to subscribe to X Premium, which offers paid subscribers additional features such as the ability to make longer posts and increased visibility.
As of now, users can still access X for free, but Musk’s comments have raised speculation about potential changes to the platform’s fee structure in the future.
