Residents of northern Gaza will have a brief window of opportunity, according to the Israeli army, to relocate southward past Wadi Gaza. The military announced on its Arabic X account that traffic will be permitted on Salah al-Din Street on Sunday from 10am to 2pm (08:00 GMT to 12:00 GMT), Al Jazeera reported.
According to UN estimates, there are roughly 300,000 internally displaced people in northern Gaza. However, people in Gaza are not buying the Israeli narrative of offering a safe passage to travel south.
While a safe route for ambulances and civilians to travel south was declared a few days ago, horrifying photos and videos showed burned cars that were the target of Israeli airstrikes and bodies lying on the ground.
Furthermore, a large portion of Salah al-Din Street’s infrastructure, or the path leading south, has been destroyed. Additionally, there is a 2 km (1.2 mile) stretch of this road that requires walking.
People are therefore reluctant to travel south due to the area’s dangers unless they are assured of their safety.
Meanwhhile, strikes on a central Gaza refugee camp and a water reservoir killed over 38. Fighting continues to rage in densely populated Gaza, despite calls for a ceasefire from Arab countries and desperate civilians after 30 days of war.
Unwilling to consider a ceasefire, however, Israel dropped fresh evacuation notices on Sunday urging Gazans to move north amid continued bombing.
