India secured their eighth Asia Cup title on Sunday, inflicting upon Sri Lanka their most devastating home ODI defeat.
In a remarkable display of dominance, India defeated Sri Lanka by 10 wickets, successfully chasing down the meager target of 50 runs in just 6.1 overs. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) praised the team’s exceptional performance, describing it as a “clinical show.”
Sri Lanka’s batting lineup crumbled as Mohammed Siraj wreaked havoc, taking six crucial wickets, leaving them all out for a mere 50 runs. The Sri Lankan team lost six wickets in quick succession when the scoreboard read a mere 12 runs.
The day belonged to Siraj, as the pacer dismantled the Sri Lankan batting lineup in just six overs, leaving Sri Lanka struggling at 12 for six. Earlier, in the final of the Asia Cup 2023 championship, Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat first against India. The match took place at Colombo’s Premadasa Stadium.
This encounter marked the second meeting between these two teams in the tournament, with India previously defeating Sri Lanka by 41 runs during the Super 4 stage.
Notably, both teams were missing key players, with Theekshana and Axar absent from their respective squads, adding to the challenge of today’s high-stakes clash.
The Asia Cup tournament has been plagued by persistent rain, serving as a precursor to the ODI World Cup, with forecasts indicating more precipitation on Sunday evening. Despite entering the tournament as underdogs, Sri Lanka managed to edge out Pakistan in their last Super Four encounter, earning them a spot in the 50-over tournament final against India.
It’s worth noting that Sri Lanka was the winner of the last Asia Cup, which was played in the T20 format. In a significant lineup change, Washington Sundar has stepped in to replace Axar Patel, who sustained an injury during India’s loss to Bangladesh in an inconsequential Super Four match at the same venue.
The Indian team has been strengthened with the return of key players, including Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah, who were previously rested.
