In a stunning upset, New Zealand secured a seven-wicket victory over Pakistan in the third Twenty20 international in Rawalpindi on Sunday, with Mark Chapman playing a pivotal role with a robust half-century.
The 29-year-old left-hander showcased his prowess with the bat, smashing a remarkable 42-ball 87 to lead New Zealand’s chase of the 179-run target in just 18.2 overs, silencing a packed 16,000-holiday crowd and leveling the five-match series at 1-1.
Pakistan posted a competitive total of 178-4 after being put into bat, with Shadab Khan (41) and Babar Azam (37) leading the charge. Opener Saim Ayub and Muhammad Irfan Khan also made valuable contributions, scoring 32 and 30 not out respectively.
Chapman’s innings was well-supported by Dean Foxcroft (31), as the duo forged a formidable 117-run partnership for the third wicket, setting the stage for New Zealand’s thrilling chase.
Chapman, known for his aggressive stroke play, clobbered four sixes and nine fours en route to his eighth half-century in the format, displaying his dominance against the formidable Pakistan bowling attack.
Despite a late surge from Pakistan’s bowlers, Chapman remained unfazed, guiding New Zealand to victory with ten balls to spare, alongside Jimmy Neesham (six not out).
With this win, New Zealand leveled the series at 1-1, after Pakistan clinched victory in the second game. The final two matches of the series are scheduled in Lahore on April 25 and 27.
