The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) has finalized preparations for the intra-party elections scheduled for today (Saturday) in compliance with the directives of the Election Commission of Pakistan.
Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, nominated by Imran Khan for the top slot a couple of days ago, has formally submitted his nomination papers for the position of the party’s chairman.
While PTI’s spokesperson did not officially disclose details regarding the polling arrangements, the names of other candidates, or the voting location, the party is poised for the crucial election process.
PTI has nominated Barrister Gohar Ali Khan for the chairman’s position in the upcoming intra-party elections, following the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) directive to hold fresh elections. The ECP had annulled the PTI’s intra-party polls held last year, terming them “highly objectionable” and gave the party 20 days to conduct new elections to retain its electoral symbol.
Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, chosen by PTI Chairman Imran Khan, submitted his nomination papers for the chairman’s office. However, the nomination has reportedly caused a rift within the party, with some members expressing discontent. Critics within the party argue that loyalists like Ali Mohammad Khan, Senator Humayun Mohmand, and Advocate Hamid Khan have been ignored in favor of a newcomer.
The ECP’s decision to annul the previous intra-party elections came at a crucial time when general elections are approaching in about two months. The PTI has raised concerns about an uneven playing field and has accused the ECP of attempting to keep Imran Khan and the party away from the polls.
Despite internal controversies, a PTI spokesperson stated that the party’s decision to hold intra-party elections again demonstrates its commitment to democracy and the rule of law. The spokesperson highlighted that PTI had already conducted intra-party elections last year but chose to hold them again, respecting the ECP’s decision to nullify the previous polls.
The nomination of Barrister Gohar Ali Khan is seen as a move by Imran Khan to bury traditional hereditary and “family-limited” politics within the party. The PTI aims to set an example of democracy by nominating a hard-working and loyal party worker for the chairman’s position. The spokesperson criticized external elements for conspiracies against PTI and expressed confidence that the party would proceed within the purview of the Constitution, law, and democratic values.
