India, the World Cup hosts, secured their second consecutive victory in the tournament, with captain Rohit Sharma’s blazing century setting the stage for their dominant eight-wicket win over Afghanistan.
Rohit unleashed a remarkable 131 runs from 84 balls, including five sixes and 16 fours. This outstanding performance allowed India to chase down a target of 273 runs with 15 overs to spare at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Virat Kohli contributed 55 not out and sealed the victory with a boundary.
This win solidifies India’s strong form as they prepare for a highly anticipated showdown against arch-rivals Pakistan in Ahmedabad on Saturday.
Opting to bat, Afghanistan found themselves at 63-3 in the 14th over, but skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi (80) and Azmatullah Omarzai (62) combined to build a 121-run partnership, frustrating the Indian team.
Although a total near 300 seemed possible, Afghanistan lost several wickets towards the end of their innings, ultimately settling for a score that proved insufficient against India’s formidable batting lineup.
Rohit Sharma, named the player of the match, said, “It was a good pitch to bat. I was backing myself to play my natural game. It’s my responsibility to give the team a good start as much as possible.”
India had to wait until the seventh over for a breakthrough, with Jasprit Bumrah (4-39) claiming the first wicket. Despite occasional challenges from Mohammed Siraj, Bumrah’s excellent initial spell put pressure on the Afghan batters.
Hashmatullah and Omarzai’s partnership temporarily halted India’s progress, but Hardik Pandya and Kuldeep Yadav took key wickets towards the end of the innings, preventing Afghanistan from reaching a more competitive total.
Rohit Sharma, known for his century-scoring ability, showcased dazzling strokeplay during India’s chase. Fazalhaq Farooqi was hit hard as Rohit set the tone with powerful shots.
While Rashid Khan was Afghanistan’s best hope against Rohit’s onslaught, he was introduced into the attack late, with India already well positioned. Rohit reached his century in 63 balls but eventually fell to Rashid. However, Kohli remained steady, guiding India to victory.
