Police arrested two women on Friday after they threw an egg at Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan’s sister, Aleema Khanum, while she was addressing a press conference outside Adiala Jail, where the Toshakhana case hearing had taken place earlier in the day.
According to a statement issued by Rawalpindi police, the suspects were PTI supporters who had arrived in the city with members of the All Government Employees Grand Alliance and the All Pakistan Clerks Association to protest over their unfulfilled demands.
“The egging occurred when Aleema Khan did not respond to the questions raised by the two women,” the police statement read. “Both suspects have been taken into custody and shifted to the Adiala checkpoint.”
Police further stated that after hurling the egg, the women attempted to flee in their vehicle. However, PTI supporters present at the site surrounded the car and pelted it with pebbles, shattering its windscreen.
Footage of the incident, which captured Aleema’s shocked reaction, quickly went viral on television and social media platforms, sparking widespread discussion.
Islamabad High Court lawyer and member of Imran Khan’s legal team, Fida Hussain Abbasi, condemned the act in strong words. “The act of throwing eggs at Aleema Khan by two unidentified women is shameful and strongly condemned. Such disgraceful attacks will not weaken our struggle,” he posted on X.
Aleema Khanum has been actively campaigning for the release of her brother since August 2024. Imran Khan, jailed since August 2023, is currently serving a sentence in the £190 million corruption case and also faces pending trials in the May 9 cases under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
