In a thrilling World Cup opener, Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra showcased their brilliance as they powered New Zealand to a resounding nine-wicket triumph over defending champions England.
The Kiwis, who elected to bowl at Ahmedabad’s colossal cricket stadium, restricted England to 282-9, capitalizing on the absence of talismanic Ben Stokes due to injury. The left-handed duo of Devon Conway (152) and Rachin Ravindra (123) then put on a sensational unbeaten partnership of 273 runs for the second wicket. With 13.4 overs to spare, the Black Caps comfortably surpassed the target, marking a stark contrast to the thrilling World Cup final encounter between these teams at Lord’s in 2019.
“Sometimes it’s unbelievable at times, but great to have a great day out,” said an elated Rachin Ravindra. “The bowlers bowled well, and we were lucky enough to have Devon out there. I have spent a lot of time with Dev, and we are very, very close mates.”
Led by Tom Latham in the absence of regular skipper Kane Williamson, New Zealand’s bowlers kept England to a below-par total despite Joe Root’s valiant 77.
Conway and Ravindra made quick work of the target, relentlessly attacking the opposition bowlers throughout the match. Conway notched the first century of the tournament, reaching the milestone in just 83 balls, adorned with 13 fours and two sixes. He also crossed 1,000 runs in 23 ODI matches.
Rachin Ravindra, at the age of 23, swiftly followed suit, achieving his maiden ODI century in just 82 balls, featuring nine fours and four sixes. Their spectacular partnership not only secured a resounding victory but also provided New Zealand with an early boost to their net run-rate.
