Two retired officers of the Pakistan Army have been found guilty and sentenced for “inciting sedition” under the Army Act, as well as for violations of the provisions of the Official Secrets Act, as per a statement released by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) on Saturday.
According to the military’s media wing, Major (Retired) Adil Farooq Raja and Captain (Retired) Haider Raza Mehdi, both former officers of the Pakistan Army, were convicted and sentenced through a Field General Court Martial (FGCM).
The statement clarified that the retired officers faced charges related to inciting sedition among army personnel in the discharge of duties and violating provisions of the Official Secrets Act, 1923, which pertains to espionage and acts prejudicial to the safety and interest of the state.
The court of competent jurisdiction convicted and adjudged both individuals on October 7th and 9th, 2023, following a due judicial process. Major (Retired) Raja has been given a 14-year rigorous imprisonment, while Captain (Retired) Mehdi has been awarded a 12-year rigorous imprisonment.
In addition to the sentences, the ISPR noted that the ranks of both officers were forfeited on November 21, 2023. It was highlighted that both individuals, who have undergone court-martial proceedings, are currently residing outside Pakistan.
