A recently published report by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has highlighted a concerning issue within the Pakistani aviation sector: the punctuality problem. According to the CAA report, all Pakistani airlines struggled to deliver passengers on time during the initial six months of this year.
This report serves as a stark reminder of the persistent challenges faced by the Pakistani aviation industry, encompassing issues such as mismanagement, financial difficulties, and inadequate infrastructure. These factors have collectively contributed to the airlines’ struggles in operating punctually.
Among the domestic airlines, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), the national carrier, exhibited the poorest punctuality record, with only 58.24% of its flights departing on schedule. The report squarely attributes PIA’s poor performance to mismanagement and a financial crisis.
However, the report also sheds light on a more positive note. Four private airlines have outshone the national carrier in terms of on-time departures. Fly Jinnah boasts the highest on-time departure ratio at a remarkable 87.93%, followed by Air Sial with 86.89%, Airblue with 78.36%, and Serene Air with 62.07%.
In the financial arena, PIA faced significant setbacks, reporting a staggering loss of Rs60.71 billion in the first half of 2023, as revealed in its financial report. This loss represents a substantial increase from the Rs41.31 billion loss recorded during the same period in the previous year.
The depreciation of the Pakistani rupee played a pivotal role in PIA’s financial woes, causing a loss of Rs27.45 billion during the first half of this year. This figure significantly surpasses the Rs13.85 billion loss attributed to currency exchange rate fluctuations during the corresponding period in 2022.
Further exacerbating the financial challenges, PIA incurred substantial expenses in fuel and oil, amounting to Rs48.34 billion in the initial half of 2023. The airline’s finance cost also increased, reaching Rs36.82 billion during the first half of this year, compared to Rs21.11 billion for the same period in the previous year.
Despite these financial hurdles, Pakistan International Airlines managed to generate revenue amounting to Rs120.27 billion in the first six months of 2023.
