Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has instructed authorities to take preemptive measures following the Pakistan Meteorological Department’s (PMD) forecast of heavy rainfall across the province till April 29.
The PMD’s alert, issued on April 22, predicted a new spell of rainfall in Punjab, with moderate to heavy rains expected in various cities including Lahore from April 26 to 29.
According to the PMD, rain-wind/thunderstorms are anticipated in several areas, with occasional hailstorms expected in isolated places during this period.
CM Maryam emphasized the need for proactive action, directing commissioners, deputy commissioners, and the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) managing director to ensure effective drainage of rainwater. She underscored the importance of officials being present on the ground round-the-clock to utilize all available resources for water drainage.
Additionally, the chief minister issued orders to maintain smooth traffic flow in Lahore and other cities, urging active duty by traffic wardens to assist citizens during and after the rains. Rescue services were also instructed to promptly evacuate residents of low-lying areas to safety.
CM Maryam stressed the importance of early warnings to residents through media, social media, and mobile alerts. She highlighted the need to protect livestock in rural areas and urged effective coordination among relevant agencies for disaster preparedness.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has also directed provincial and district disaster management authorities to prepare for nationwide torrential rains and thunderstorms until April 29.
