As Pakistan seeks a fresh IMF bailout package, the United States has promised its support to Islamabad in managing the country’s challenging debt burden.
State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller stated, “Pakistan has made progress to stabilise its economy, and we support its efforts to manage its daunting debt burden.”
Miller affirmed that US support for Pakistan’s economic success remains steadfast, emphasizing continued engagement through technical agreements, trade, and investment ties.
He welcomed the staff-level agreement between the IMF and Pakistan, which could release about $1.1 billion to the struggling nation upon approval by the IMF’s board.
Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb is currently in the US for IMF meetings and World Bank sessions.
Sources suggest Pakistan seeks to enhance the Extended Fund Facility through climate finance, potentially securing $6 to $8 billion.
IMF chief Kristalina Georgieva acknowledged Pakistan’s progress under its existing program and expressed openness to a follow-up arrangement.
