Australia’s win secured them 12 points, making them the third team to clinch a spot in the semi-finals alongside India and South Africa. The result also kept Pakistan’s hopes alive for qualification into the semi-finals.
Initially struggling at 91 for seven wickets in pursuit of Afghanistan’s 292, Maxwell’s extraordinary counter-attack turned the tide of the game. Despite battling cramps and adopting a cautious running strategy, Maxwell powered through with 21 fours and 10 sixes, many of which were struck on one leg. His unbeaten partnership of 202 runs with captain Pat Cummins proved to be the turning point, leading Australia to victory with 19 balls to spare.
Afghanistan’s bowlers attempted numerous strategies, but they were unable to dismiss Maxwell, who also survived a dropped catch and successfully overturned a leg-before-wicket decision.
