In a formal ceremony held in Islamabad, Admiral Naveed Ashraf assumed the role of Pakistan’s 23rd naval chief, succeeding Admiral Amjad Khan Niazi.
The Director General Public Relations (Navy) had previously announced Admiral Ashraf’s appointment, including his promotion to a four-star rank. During his farewell address, outgoing naval chief Admiral Amjad Khan Niazi extended his congratulations to Admiral Naveed Ashraf, acknowledging his distinguished career and significant achievements. He expressed confidence in Admiral Ashraf’s leadership and capabilities, stating that he believed the new naval chief would guide the force to new heights.
Admiral Niazi emphasized the strength of the Pakistan Navy as a vital component of the country’s armed forces, capable of safeguarding maritime frontiers. He highlighted Pakistan’s commitment to collaborating on maritime security.
Additionally, Admiral Niazi commented on the evolving situation in the region, noting the emergence of a more assertive India marked by fundamentalism, extremism, and expansionism. He emphasized the need for Pakistan to respond to these challenges with professionalism, preparedness, and unwavering self-esteem.
The outgoing chief also underscored the significance of the blue economy for any nation.
Admiral Naveed Ashraf’s career in the Pakistan Navy began in 1989 when he was commissioned in the Operations Branch. He received the Quaid-e-Azam Gold Medal upon completing his initial naval training in Germany and Pakistan.
Throughout his illustrious career, Admiral Ashraf has held various command and staff positions. His extensive command experience spans over ten years, including commanding a gunboat, a mine hunter, three destroyers, and leading the 25th and 18th destroyer squadrons. He has also served as the Commandant of the Pakistan Naval Academy and commanded the Pakistan Navy Fleet.
In addition to his command roles, Admiral Ashraf has held key staff appointments, including Fleet Operations Officer at HQ Commander Pakistan Fleet, Captain Training at HQ Flag Officer Sea Training, Chief Staff Officer to Task Force-151 at HQ NAVCENT Bahrain, Deputy President National Defence University, Naval Secretary, Deputy Chief of Naval Staff (Admin), Director General C4I, Deputy Chief of Naval Staff (Training & Personnel), and Deputy Chief of Naval Staff (Operations).
He is a graduate of Pakistan Navy War College Lahore, National Defence University Islamabad, Naval Staff College USA, and the Royal College of Defence Studies UK. In recognition of his meritorious services, Admiral Ashraf has been awarded the Hilal-i-Imtiaz (Military) and Tamgha-e-Basalat.
