Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Nawaz Sharif addressed his return to Pakistan after a four-year self-imposed exile in London, emphasizing a message of reconciliation and the need for national progress. The former prime minister, who briefly visited Islamabad to file appeals against his convictions, then proceeded to Lahore to launch his party’s campaign for the upcoming elections in the presence of a large gathering of his supporters.
Clarifying his intentions, Nawaz Sharif explicitly stated that he harbored no desire for retribution against his political adversaries. Instead, he urged all constitutional institutions to collaborate in the pursuit of the country’s development. Despite being barred from holding public office due to his convictions, he pledged to address the pressing issue of inflation, expressing his aspiration for a poverty-free and educated Pakistan.
In his address at Minar-e-Pakistan in Lahore, the veteran politician reminisced about his previous contributions to the nation. He highlighted his commitment to the welfare of the country and its people, stressing his resolve to resolve the country’s challenges. He also hinted at the necessity of improving relations with neighboring countries, particularly with India, to facilitate progress and stability.
Recalling significant milestones during his tenure, Nawaz Sharif emphasized his role in making Pakistan a nuclear power and resolving the persistent issue of power shortages. Expressing his dismay at the skyrocketing inflation and economic crises, he pointed out the adverse effects on the daily lives of ordinary citizens. He attributed the current economic struggles to mismanagement and questioned the motives behind his removal from office.
Reflecting on personal hardships, Nawaz Sharif shared emotional anecdotes about the losses of his mother and wife during his legal battles.
