In a significant development, caretaker Information Minister Murtaza Solangi held a meeting with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Shafqat Mahmood to foster agreement on the upcoming general elections and alleviate the prevailing tense political environment.
The meeting, as per a PTI statement, took place at Mahmood’s residence at the request of Solangi, where discussions encompassed ensuring transparent and fair elections, fostering national consensus, and providing a level playing field for all political parties.
The PTI has continuously emphasized the need for equal opportunities and fair conditions for political participation, particularly following the May 9 riots and subsequent arrests of party members.
The May 9 riots, triggered by the arrest of the ousted prime minister in a £190 million settlement case, led to significant unrest, with protesters targeting key civil and military installations across the country, resulting in widespread arrests and military action.
The caretaker government, led by Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar and Solangi, pledged to uphold a fair and balanced election process for all parties during their term.
Mahmood stressed the importance of creating an impartial and transparent electoral environment to ensure the effectiveness and integrity of the electoral process, raising concerns over unequal treatment faced by the PTI during their election campaign.
Post-meeting, Solangi clarified that the discussion was purely a friendly interaction, emphasizing that the meeting was not politically motivated, and that such dialogues with various individuals and political entities were not indicative of political alignments.
