Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa has pledged to formulate a “comprehensive policy” regarding pending cases and the establishment of enduring benches during his tenure. This commitment was conveyed by PBC’s Executive Committee Chairman, Hassan Raza Pasha, and Vice-Chairman Haroon-ur-Rashid during a press conference following their meeting with CJP Isa and Senior Puisne Judge Justice Sardar Tariq Masood.The meeting was convened by the apex court judges to address issues related to bench formation and prioritizing pending cases. During this gathering, lawyers presented suggestions to expedite urgent cases and enhance the justice delivery process.Pasha announced that a committee comprising top court judges, PBC, and SCBA representatives had been formed to address these concerns, and a new case listing mechanism would be introduced. This comprehensive policy will remain in effect beyond the chief justice’s tenure.CJP Isa assured both lawyers’ associations that he would provide updates on the implementation of their recommendations after his retirement. Pasha noted that many of their suggestions aligned closely with the chief justice’s willingness to implement them, with a significant overlap of 70% to 89% in recommendations from PBC and SCBA.Both lawyer bodies emphasized their unity in pursuing justice, clarifying that the discussion did not extend to elections or political cases but focused solely on Supreme Court issues.
They had previously submitted their recommendations to the chief justice, highlighting the challenges faced by the public, including the delayed listing of urgent cases.This marks CJP Isa’s first week in office, succeeding Justice (retd) Umar Ata Bandial as the 29th chief justice of the apex court.
