After enduring scorching hot weather, Karachi is finally expected to receive some relief as monsoon rains have been forecasted from July 8 to 10.
Weather expert Owais Haider indicated that the metropolis might experience drizzling in the evening or night today (Sunday). He mentioned that “a thunder-cell” was anticipated to form in the northeast. Despite the expected rain, temperatures are predicted to hover between 37°C to 39°C, with heat intensity likely increasing during the day.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) confirmed that Karachi might receive drizzling this evening or night. However, the overall weather is expected to remain hot and humid in the next 24 hours. The Met Office reported that winds were blowing at a speed of 17 kilometers per hour from the west, with humidity levels at 74%. The mercury is expected to rise as high as 37°C.
In anticipation of the upcoming monsoon spell, the Cantonment Board Clifton (CBC) of Karachi imposed a rain emergency on Saturday in areas under its jurisdiction. Special teams have been appointed for the timely drainage of rainwater. A CBC spokesperson announced that 1,288 staffers have been designated for special duties under the rain emergency plan, including 638 in seven sectors, while 650 other staffers will focus on draining rainwater.
The CBC has identified low-lying areas that could be affected by the downpours. Special teams have been assigned specific tasks in DHA Phase-I to Phase VIII, Clifton Block 8, 9, and the market area. Heavy machinery will be deployed in the affected areas, with additional teams stationed at commercial avenues of Khayaban-e-Shujaat, Khayaban-e-Shehbaz, Khayaban-e-Badar, and Khayaban-e-Tariq.
As Karachi braces for the monsoon rains, residents can look forward to some respite from the extreme heat, although the city must remain vigilant and prepared for potential flooding and waterlogging issues.
