The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) soared to new heights on Wednesday as the KSE-100 Index breached the psychological barrier of 87,000 points, setting a historic record of 87,128.04 points in early trading. The market’s bullish performance is primarily attributed to investor optimism about Pakistan’s economic recovery, backed by robust data and favorable projections from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
The benchmark index rose from Tuesday’s close of 86,466 points, driven by heavy buying in key sectors such as automobile assemblers, cement, chemicals, commercial banks, oil and gas exploration companies, oil marketing companies (OMCs), and refineries.
Bullish Sentiment and Earnings Season
The first quarter of fiscal year 2024 (1QFY2024) is seeing strong corporate earnings, and analysts forecast substantial payouts and dividends. Investors are actively positioning themselves in sectors expected to benefit from the ongoing earnings season, contributing to the positive market momentum.
The passage of the 26th Amendment, which limits the judiciary’s power to appoint the Chief Justice, has further fueled market optimism. The amendment, which was passed after weeks of intense parliamentary debate, signals greater political stability—a factor that has reassured investors.
IMF Projections and Economic Data
The market rally has been bolstered by the IMF’s projection of 3.2% GDP growth for fiscal year 2025, accompanied by decreasing inflationary pressures. Analysts predict that this growth will provide a modest boost to employment levels, further supporting investor sentiment.
In addition to IMF projections, recent data from the State Bank of Pakistan has also played a key role. Pakistan recorded a $119 million current account surplus for September, the highest since April 2024. This follows a modest $29 million surplus in August and marks a significant turnaround from a $218 million deficit in September 2023. Foreign direct investment (FDI) has also surged by 48% year-on-year, reaching $771 million in the first quarter of FY2025.
Positive Market Outlook
With positive economic indicators and strong corporate earnings, the PSX is expected to maintain its bullish trajectory. Analysts predict further gains in blue-chip sectors as investor confidence continues to rise.
