The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has secured the majority of seats in the by-elections held in Karachi’s nine local government constituencies for the positions of union committee (UC) chairmen, vice chairmen, and ward councillors. Among the successful candidates were Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab and Deputy Mayor Salman Abdullah Murad, who both won in various constituencies.
The PPP won a total of five seats, while the Jamaat-i-Islami secured two seats of general councillors, and the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf won the by-election for the UC vice chairman seat in Saddar Town. An independent candidate also won a general councillor seat in Malir Town.
The polling process, which lasted from 8 am to 5 pm, was largely smooth and peaceful, with some minor incidents reported in certain areas. One such incident occurred in Memon Goth, where there were accusations of rigging and the use of district administration to influence the process. Similarly, an episode of violence occurred in the Gizri area, prompting police intervention and control of the situation.
In other districts of Sindh, PPP candidates also emerged victorious in the by-elections. Strict security arrangements were made at all polling stations, ensuring that the voting process was conducted smoothly. Unofficial results indicated victories for PPP candidates in Town Committee Tando Adam in Sanghar district and in Daur, Shaheed Benazirabad.
