Awami Muslim League (AML) leader and former interior minister, Sheikh Rashid, revealed that he is now dedicated to securing amnesty for individuals who he believes made a “mistake” by participating in the May 9 riots. Rashid made this announcement on X (formerly Twitter) and expressed his gratitude for the nation’s prayers during his 40-day absence, during which he claimed he was “missing” but unharmed.
Sheikh Rashid stated that he was now committed to a mission to obtain amnesty for those who were allegedly wronged during the events of May 9, particularly individuals who he believes are innocent but imprisoned. He appealed to his Twitter followers to support him in this peaceful endeavor, acknowledging that it was his first appeal to them for assistance.
He outlined his plan to begin working on this mission the following day and requested further prayers. Rashid expressed his belief in the ultimate success of their mission, stating that with the prayers of mothers, sisters, and daughters, they would be victorious.
Sheikh Rashid had reappeared on Friday after being reportedly arrested on September 17. In an interview with a private TV channel, he explained his absence, saying that he had embarked on a 40-day preaching mission (tableegh) and that he had experienced a peaceful and cooperative journey during that time.
Rashid made it clear that he had not disbanded his political party, AML, and had no intentions of joining any other party. He also expressed his strong support for the Pakistan Army, emphasizing his pro-military stance and describing himself as a spokesperson for the Pakistan Army. He stressed the importance of politicians working collaboratively with the country’s institutions.
